It was three thirty in the morning and all was quiet. There I was in my rumpled pajamas and squinty eyes, trying to deny that I was awake. I reclined on the sofa with my cat snuggled in beside me and all I could hear was the whispering purr of a happy feline.
Often when I’m awakened in the night, there is someone on my mind and I take time to pray for them. There have been times when those prayers have been very specific. More often than not, however, the prayers are as simple as asking God to keep my loved ones safe.
This morning was different. Outside the window creation was coming to life one little birdsong at a time. I heard the faint ‘chirp, chirp’ of the sparrows as they were getting ready to leave their nests. Then I heard ‘tweedly, tweet-tweet’ of the robins as they were preparing their daily worm hunting. It was soothing and peaceful. It was a sacred moment.
I began to imagine in my mind a symphony of praise. And like an orchestral introduction to a beautiful song, the rhythmic singing began to crescendo. Finally above the chirps and tweets came the beautiful song of the red bird. A cardinal was singing at the top of its voice to welcome the day. The melody as beautiful as the bright red feathers that catch my eye when I am walking in the park.
This morning as I listened, I know that what I heard was God’s creation saying, “Thank you”. Creation was fulfilling its purpose; giving praise to the One who made it all.
“Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature,
O thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown.
Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
robed in the blooming garb of spring:
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer
who makes the woeful heart to sing.”
Prayer for Today
Fairest Lord Jesus,
That you would take meticulous care to create our beautiful earth and all that is within it and still you created me.
That you would allow me to set foot on the fair meadows and woodlands that you have created.
That you would awaken me early enough to hear the most beautiful symphony of all.
How can I do anything but bow and thank you for it all.
In your name I pray,
*Fairest Lord Jesus
